Career
In the Tamil Nadu district of Ootacamund, he started his career as a Sub-Divisional-Magistrate (SDM). After passing the Civil Services Exam, he began working for the Central Secretariat Service in 1989. Sagayam left the Central Secretariat Service by choice after seven months of working in New Delhi. U. Sagayam is a Tamil Nadu state IAS officer from the 2001 batch.
He created history in 2009 when he uploaded information about his assets to the district website as the first IAS officer in Tamil Nadu.
His report from May 2012 charged many senior government officials with engaging in illegal granite quarrying and claimed that the state had lost at least Rs 16,000 crore ($160 billion) as a result of the illegal mining. He was unable to finish his research since he was next promoted to managing director of Co-optic, a cooperative of handloom weavers in Chennai.
